South Sudan’s Ministry of Interior has discussed election security arrangements and access to humanitarian corridors with the United Nations ahead of the general elections scheduled for December 2026.
The discussions focused on strengthening security preparations, building the capacity of police personnel, and securing UN support for the electoral process and humanitarian operations.
Speaking after the meeting, Caretaker Deputy Minister of Interior Marial Gumbke said the minister raised several areas requiring UN cooperation, including capacity-building for police officers currently undergoing training across the country as part of preparations for the elections.
“We had a discussion where the Honourable Minister presented a number of issues that required her cooperation. These included capacity building for our police personnel, who are currently undergoing training across the country as part of election preparations,” Gumbke said.
She said the meeting also addressed access to humanitarian corridors, adding that the UN representative had pledged to convey the concerns to the relevant authorities within the Ministry of Interior.
Gumbke said the discussions were aimed at strengthening cooperation as the country prepares for the polls.
The meeting comes as the government and its partners intensify preparations for the December elections, with security and logistical arrangements remaining key priorities.
Meanwhile, South Sudan is recruiting personnel from the National Wildlife Service to support election security arrangements.
The recruitment is part of broader efforts to strengthen security during the electoral process as the government works with national institutions and international partners to support peaceful and credible elections.
