Guwahati: Retired IPS officer Violet Baruah on Tuesday questioned the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, asking why it failed to collect evidence for its claims and why evidence and videos went missing after a charge sheet running into thousands of pages was filed. In a social media post, she said the trial now underway in court is bringing out details one by one.
Referring to the allegation that Garg was made to drink through the night in a hotel room, Baruah said, "It is being said in court that Zubeen was made to drink alcohol in the hotel room all night, so why did the investigators not collect any evidence of this, or choose not to collect it?"
"Of course, what evidence can an investigator who visits the spot a month later find?" she added.
Talking about the procedure, she said, "As per the rules, evidence is collected first, and only then does the whole incident come to light and get shared with the general public." "But now it seems that in the name of investigation, the SIT wrote a drama of its own making beforehand, forced us to imagine it, and we are accepting it and watching it every day," she said.
Baruah questioned why this had happened in the case of a cultural icon of Assam. She said she had understood that the SIT was formed with highly skilled officers, and asked why the evidence and videos disappeared even after the charge sheet was submitted. She also asked whose responsibility it was to protect them.
She said the public only wants to know the truth about what happened to Garg in Singapore that day. She expressed hope that the court would find convincing evidence in the remaining pages of the charge sheet.
