BAJA CALIFORNIA, Mexico – Intense gusts of Santa Ana winds, exceeding 90 kilometers per hour, have triggered widespread power outages and heightened fire risks across several regions in Baja California, including Tijuana, Tecate, and Rosarito.
In Tijuana, the blackouts have affected approximately 40% of the population. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that major service disruptions began around 10:30 AM as the winds battered the region’s power infrastructure. While the utility has deployed dozens of crews to restore power, residents in several neighborhoods, particularly in the eastern part of the city, remain without electricity.
The municipal government of Tijuana issued a statement confirming that the local palace is also experiencing power failures and stated they are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
Fire Alerts and Public Safety
Beyond the power grid issues, the Tijuana Fire Department has issued an urgent alert regarding the high risk of wildfires. The combination of high winds and extremely dry conditions creates a dangerous environment where even a small spark can ignite uncontrollable fires, especially in areas with brush, dry grass, or wooden structures.
Authorities have urged the public to take the following preventive measures:
Avoid Open Fires: It is strictly prohibited to light bonfires, burn trash, or cook with open flames in outdoor spaces.
Secure Properties: Residents are advised to secure loose materials such as tarps, sheets, and construction debris that could be blown away by the wind.
Stay Clear of High-Risk Areas: Avoid being near power lines, trees, or large billboards that could collapse or fall during the gusts.
Air Quality Warning in Mexicali
Simultaneously, the city of Mexicali has been placed on high alert due to poor air quality. The local government reported that high concentrations of particulate matter (PM10) are lingering in the atmosphere, creating hazardous conditions for vulnerable populations.
Health officials are recommending that children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions stay indoors and wear masks if they must go outside. They have also urged the public to avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the wind patterns shift and air quality improves.
