(ANSA) - ROMA, 21 OTT - The first section of the Aqar Quf Archaeological Park (ancient Dur-Kurigalzu) was inaugurated in the presence of Italy’s Ambassador to Baghdad, Niccolò Fontana. This marks the opening to the public of one of the most significant sites of Mesopotamian heritage and represents a step forward in its preservation and promotion.
The initiative is part of the site’s growing international recognition; its inclusion on UNESCO’s Tentative List is the result of collaboration between the University of Bologna and Iraq’s State Board of Antiquities and Heritage. The complex includes the imposing ziggurat, the remains of the ancient Kassite royal city, and the monuments that bear witness to its urban organization and historical-cultural landscape.
The project combines archaeological research, innovative technologies, conservation and restoration, specialized training, and the involvement of local communities. Activities include surveys using drones and photogrammetry techniques, high-resolution documentation, and diagnostic analyses, along with interventions to protect ancient structures, improve safety, and enhance public access to the site.
These activities are part of ArTourBagh, a three-year Italian cooperation project worth 3 million euros, implemented through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in collaboration with the University of Bologna, the University of Catania, CRAST, and AVSI. The initiative aims to preserve Iraq’s archaeological heritage and promote a model of sustainable cultural tourism in the Baghdad area. The project combines heritage conservation efforts with training and awareness-raising activities. 156 people have acquired theoretical knowledge or technical skills through courses, seminars, and conservation workshops, while approximately 320 young people have participated in 30 educational initiatives targeting schools and local communities. ArTourBagh also aims to foster new employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in the sectors of guided tours, crafts, hospitality, and tourism services, with a particular focus on young people, women, and local communities.
The inauguration reaffirms Italy’s commitment to working alongside Iraqi institutions to protect and promote a heritage of exceptional historical and cultural significance. By sharing expertise and strengthening local capacities, the embassy emphasizes, Italian cooperation helps make culture a resource for sustainable development, community growth, and the strengthening of ties of friendship between Italy and Iraq.
