NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have registered an FIR in connection with the alleged unauthorised entry into the Jantar Mantar area by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and other members, news agency PTI reported on Tuesday. As per the PTI report, the FIR includes sections relating to the alleged breach of a peace bond signed earlier by the three leaders. The case was registered hours after the activists allegedly entered the heavily barricaded protest site and raised slogans demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Jantar Mantar was recently denotified as a designated site for protests and demonstrations.Das, Ranka and some other CJP members were detained early Tuesday for allegedly entering the area in violation of prohibitory orders. The outfit said around 11 of its members had been detained.A police officer said the protesters were taken to Jaffarpur Kalan Police Station in Dwarka district. Security was subsequently tightened around the police station after some CJP workers gathered there.CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke described the group's action as an attempt to reclaim Jantar Mantar, asserting that the site's denotification would not stop the outfit from continuing its agitation.
The latest action follows the detention of Dipke, Das and Ranka on Saturday, when they arrived in Delhi amid a major security clampdown that prevented the outfit from holding its planned protest demanding Kumar's resignation. They were released a day later after agreeing not to breach the peace for a year. The restrictions on protests at Jantar Mantar follow a standing order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar on October 11, designating Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as alternative venues for protests and demonstrations. The CJP said the denotification of Jantar Mantar was announced on October 12, the same day its representatives approached Parliament Street Police Station to seek permission for a peaceful demonstration at the site. The outfit has criticised the decision, arguing that moving protests away from the national capital's political centre would reduce the visibility of public dissent. The developments come amid heightened security in New Delhi following protest calls by various organisations demanding Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
