Citizens’ Voice Coimbatore (CVC) has urged the Tamil Nadu government to examine linking verified, unpaid traffic challans with vehicle insurance renewal and transport-related services to improve fine recovery and road discipline.
In a representation to Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban on October 17 (Saturday), CVC proposed using insurance renewal to notify vehicle owners of pending challans and facilitate payment through authorised government platforms.
The organisation cited difficulties in recovering penalties owing to outdated contact details, lack of awareness and failure to respond to notices. It referred to a reported case of a 42-year-old individual having 140 pending traffic penalties.
CVC sought coordination among the Traffic Police, Transport Department, Regional Transport Authorities and insurance providers to enable verification and online payment of dues.
It also called for legal safeguards, including prior notification, an opportunity to dispute incorrect challans and a grievances-redress mechanism before restrictions are imposed. Disputed penalties should be distinguished from confirmed unpaid dues, it said.
The organisation added that the proposal could improve traffic-rule compliance, reduce administrative follow-up and contribute to road safety.
