The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom have launched two joint postgraduate programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Data Technologies, and Digital Media and Communications.
The programmes were launched on Thursday, October 15, 2026, as part of a transnational education partnership between the two universities, with teaching scheduled to begin in September 2027.
In a post shared via X on Friday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, recalled that both universities signed an agreement on January 29, 2026, to establish the partnership under Nigeria’s Transnational Education (TNE) programme.
The initiative is also expected to pave the way for the introduction of bachelor’s degree programmes in relevant fields next year.

Describing the development as a milestone for Nigeria’s education sector, the statement said the partnership was aimed at expanding access to quality higher education within the country.
“Yesterday, as part of this partnership, we officially launched two joint postgraduate programmes in Artificial Intelligence & Data Technologies and Digital Media & Communications, with teaching beginning in September 2027 and plans to introduce bachelor’s degree programmes in market-relevant fields next year,” he said.
The announcement linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the government’s efforts to improve education quality through the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
It also acknowledged the contributions of the leadership of both universities, the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the British High Commission and other stakeholders involved in the partnership.
“This is what meaningful international partnerships can achieve. We are raising the bar for tertiary education in Nigeria, creating new opportunities for our young people and positioning our universities on the global stage. And we are only getting started!” Alausa added.
