It looks like Silicon Valley’s tech moguls aren’t the only ones adapting to the age of artificial intelligence. At its 2026 national summit, the book-ban-pushing, DEI-opposing, trans-fearing Moms of Liberty group unveiled a new AI tool designed to monitor school board agendas across more than 13,000 school districts nationwide.
Moms for Liberty was founded in 2021 in response to pandemic-related restrictions adopted by public schools. The group began protesting school mask mandates and quarantine requirements, but soon began targeting diversity initiatives, vigorously opposing restroom access for transgender students, and partnering with major GOP figures like Florida governor Ron DeSantis and Iowa governor Kim Reynolds to advance conservative policies (including the Parental Rights in Education Act, a.k.a. the “Don’t Say Gay” bill). In the nearly six years since its conception, the group has hosted a series of high-profile political summits featuring guests such as Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, and even Donald Trump himself. (“Our country is being poisoned,” Trump said at a 2024 event, speaking about migrants and their children in public schools. “And your schools and your children are suffering greatly because they’re going into the classrooms…and they don’t even speak English.”)
Last week’s conference was held in Dallas and branded the fifth annual Joyful Warriors National Summit. The organization took a page out of Elon Musk’s book to deploy an AI tool called M4L AWARE, which stands for Agenda Watch, Alert, Response, and Engage. The surveillance tool scans thousands of pages of school board documents every 12 hours and flags anything controversial—from Title IX issues to curriculum changes. After it alerts the local chapters to its concern, the Moms for Liberty members have about 72 hours to educate themselves on the problem at hand (including by reading an AI-generated summary) and mobilize against the creep of woke liberalism.
“School boards post these agendas just days or even hours before a vote and often bury the important items deep in the packet, so the clock has always been running against parents,” a Moms for Liberty spokesperson told Vanity Fair, adding that the tool is able to direct members to read the policies themselves, with the organization training local chapters on how to “activate” before involving a school board. “M4L AWARE gives them back the time to read the source documents, call their board members, and ask questions before the vote instead of after it’s done.”
Ironically, the organization has previously objected to certain uses of AI in schools, insisting that AI must remain under human supervision and cannot replace teachers in core instruction or grading. As always, it believes that parents should have full control over their children’s education—and data (“It’s the same principle we’ve held since we launched our AI in Education initiative: AI should be a tool under human oversight, and parents must hold the keys to the AI toolbox,” the spokesperson said).
In recent years, it’s been easy to dismiss Moms for Liberty as radical or laughably extremist. When the group was just a grassroots organization, a projected slide from one of its events went viral for claiming that “globalists, utopians, socialists, totalitarians and the UN are using public schools to undermine freedom and Christianity.”
Its events have included speakers like then North Carolina lieutenant governor Mark Robinson, who believes the transgender rights movement is “demonic” and “full of the spirit of Antichrist,” and KrisAnne Hall, who previously compared the US Capitol police to Nazi SS troops. Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio once lauded Moms for Liberty as “the gestapo with vaginas.” A number of chapters and members reportedly have close ties to QAnon and Christian nationalists, and an Indiana chapter once plastered the cover of its newsletter with a quote from Adolf Hitler: “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.” It doesn’t seem shocking that the group has opened itself up to ridicule.
Still, the organization has evolved from a small Florida fringe group into a national powerhouse. As of 2024, it boasts 310 chapters across 48 states and 130,000 members, and its growth can be traced in part to conservative heavyweights like the Heritage Foundation and the Leadership Institute. It also maintains a heavy presence in Washington.
On Friday, Texas governor Greg Abbott spoke to the masses from behind a podium that read “Parents Matter.” The Republican has long pushed to eliminate DEI policies and restrict LGBTQ+ student clubs across public school districts. He addressed a cheering crowd: “No longer can schools in the state of Texas use the education format to indoctrinate our kids.”
This year’s theme was “Boots on the Ground.” Look no further than Mark Peterson’s photos, which give an inside look at these warriors’ armor—bejeweled Stanley tumblers, star-spangled cowboy boots, and gear adorned with a simple motto: “We the Parents.”
