OMCAZ WARNS DANGOTE REFINERY FUEL SUPPLY DEAL COULD DISADVANTAGE LOCAL FIRMS
By Elesani Phiri
The Oil Marketing Companies Association of Zambia-OMCAZ-has warned that local oil marketing companies could be disadvantaged should government engage Dangote Refinery to supply fuel to Zambia through Zimbabwe, including handling distribution and storage.
OMCAZ President Dr. Kafula Mubanga says allowing major players to control fuel importation, distribution and transportation could push indigenous businesses out of the market.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Dr. Mubanga is calling on government to separate bulk fuel importation from distribution and ensure that distribution licenses prioritise locally owned companies.
His concerns come as Dangote Refinery seeks to expand its fuel supply into Zambia, raising questions about the impact on local businesses, jobs and competition in the petroleum sector.
Dr. Mubanga has also expressed concern over government’s decision to suspend the open access framework until January next year, saying delays could limit local oil marketers’ access to critical infrastructure.
He has since urged government to introduce clear regulations, ensure fair access to pipelines and storage facilities, and protect local participation in the petroleum industry.
