The Miguel Hidalgo 2409 Primary School, located in the heart of the city, will once again bring local folklore to life with its annual “Los que se quedaron” (Those Who Stayed) night tour. The event, scheduled for October 29 and 30, will take attendees on a guided journey through the school’s hallways to experience the chilling legends shared by former students and teachers.
For the fifth consecutive year, the school community will open its doors to the public, offering an immersive experience where stories of figures who allegedly appear and vanish between the corridors are not just told but reenacted in the very spaces where they are said to occur.
The concept for the tour originated in 2022, after teachers and alumni began sharing eerie accounts of unexplained phenomena. The school itself adds to the atmosphere; a construction from the Mexican Revolution era, it is rumored to have served as a military barracks and even contains underground tunnels beneath some of the classrooms—though these historical claims remain undocumented.
One of the central legends of the tour involves the story of a young girl who reportedly died of malnutrition, whose figure is said to be seen haunting the school’s garden and corridors.
To create a convincing atmosphere, approximately 50 volunteers will manage the lighting, ambiance, and performances.
Beyond the thrills of the supernatural, the event serves a vital purpose: fundraising. Proceeds from the tour go toward covering school maintenance, supplies, civic and cultural activities, and the general needs of the students, explained teacher Luisa Hernández Navarrete.
The event is expected to be a significant local draw. Advance tickets are priced at 70 pesos, and based on previous years’ attendance of 200 to 300 people per night, organizers anticipate between 500 and 600 attendees this year.
For those who prefer a quieter experience, the school will offer free visitation during two specific windows—8:00 to 8:30 PM and 9:30 to 10:00 PM. During these times, visitors can view the “Altar de Muertos” (Altar of the Dead) and place offerings for their loved ones.
The guided night tour will begin promptly at 7:00 PM on both dates.
