The Cleveland Browns’ three-game winning streak ended in Week 5 after the New York Jets handed Deshaun Watson’s team a 17-12 loss on Sunday. The Browns quarterback himself was a vocal critic of his performance after the game.
During the postgame press conference, the Browns quarterback openly said that his performance was not good enough to help Cleveland secure the victory.
“Not good enough to win,” Watson said. “Overall, we didn’t get the W, that’s all that matters to me. I’m just trying to find ways to win. It’s hard to win in this league, especially on the road versus a good team like the Jets. They played hard, but we didn’t get the W, so my performance really doesn’t matter.”

The Browns had one final opportunity to reclaim the lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Jets’ defense prevented them from completing the comeback. Watson was sacked and lost a fumble on fourth down, allowing New York to recover possession and secure the 17-12 win.
Watson completed 15 of his 33 passing attempts for 155 yards and one touchdown. However, he endured a difficult afternoon against the Jets’ pass rush, which brought him down eight times. Defensive end David Bailey accounted for three of those sacks.
Watson had competed with Shedeur Sanders throughout the preseason and training camp for Cleveland’s starting quarterback position, eventually winning the job. Under Watson, the Browns opened the season with a loss. However, Watson subsequently helped the team put together a three-game winning streak.
But now, the Week 5 loss has renewed questions about his consistency and ability to maintain the starting role. With Cleveland now sitting at 3-2, Watson will need to respond positively if he hopes to keep the job.
Sanders remains on the roster, and the competition that unfolded during the offseason could become relevant again if Watson struggles to deliver results.
