ONGWEDIVA – After years of having Bennie’s Entertainment Park as an established leisure destination, Ongwediva residents are set to gain another recreational attraction, with the town’s first leisure park under the town council nearing completion at Extension 11.
The N$3.1 million project is being developed by the Ongwediva Town Council as part of its efforts to expand public amenities and improve recreational opportunities for residents.
The park, which has reached 90% completion in its second phase, is expected to provide families with additional space to relax, enjoy outdoor activities and spend time together.
For Vanyenga Daniela, who has lived in Ongwediva for the past 24 years, the development is particularly exciting because it will give her large family another place to unwind, especially on hot days.
“This is one of the most exciting developments for Ongwediva after the trade fair.
I am so happy because my big family and I will have a place to chill, even on hot, sunny days,” Daniela said.
She said the park would offer residents another recreational destination within the town, giving families more opportunities to spend time together.
Another resident, Elis Shaaninika, welcomed the project, describing it as a long-awaited development.
“This is a long-awaited development. I have been waiting for something like this for the longest time,” Shaanika said.
According to council spokesperson Ottilie Shingenge, Phase 2 includes a beach volleyball court, communal ablution facilities, picnic and relaxation areas, landscaping, and the installation of water, sewage and electrical infrastructure.
The facilities are intended to create an attractive public space where families, friends and other community members can gather and participate in recreational activities.
The picnic and relaxation areas will provide space for visitors to unwind, while the volleyball court will introduce another outdoor activity for residents to enjoy.
The supporting infrastructure is also expected to make the park more functional for visitors.
The development is expected to contribute to local tourism, create employment opportunities and promote social interaction within the community.
Beyond the current phase, the council plans to expand the park through Phase 3, which is anticipated to commence after the completion of the current phase.
The next phase is expected to introduce additional family-oriented recreational spaces, including a proposed café or bistro and other leisure facilities.
These additions form part of the council’s broader vision to create an inclusive and vibrant public space where residents and visitors can gather, relax and enjoy recreational experiences.
Up-Mark Investment CC was contracted to undertake the project at an estimated cost of N$3.1 million.
Construction activities were scheduled to commence on 30 March 2026, with completion targeted for 30 October 2026.
With Phase 2 nearing completion, the project is expected to add a new dimension to Ongwediva’s recreational offerings, giving residents another place to enjoy their free time and spend time with their families.
