Independent Sligo County Councillor Marie Casserly has welcomed a commitment from Tourism Ireland to include Sligo and the northern section of the Wild Atlantic Way in its international tourism marketing plans for 2027.
Cllr Casserly raised the issue at a meeting of Sligo County Council, where she called for a targeted international campaign promoting Ireland, particularly the North West as a ‘coolcation’ destination for visitors seeking to escape increasingly extreme summer temperatures.
Tourism Ireland has confirmed that it plans to develop its approach further in 2027 and will include Sligo and the northern Wild Atlantic Way in its consideration set.
Cllr Casserly said she welcomed this commitment from Tourism Ireland, particularly the recognition that of Sligo and the northern Wild Atlantic Way as having a role to play in the growing ‘coolcation’ market.
“Sligo and the wider North West has so much to offer international visitors - our coastline, beaches, mountains, outdoor activities, food, culture and increasingly our temperate summer climate.
“This commitment also builds on the clear recognition of the tourism potential of the North West at the recent 40th anniversary celebrations of Ireland West Airport Knock, where Fáilte Ireland outlined its commitment to promoting Sligo and the counties north of Mayo as part of the region’s tourism offering,” she said.
Cllr Casserly referenced the ease of access to the North West region provided by Ireland West Airport Knock insisting there is a prospect of being able to entice more visitors from warmer climates to the region so that they can experience first hand all that is to offer in Sligo and the greater region.
“With Ireland West Airport Knock providing such a gateway to the region, we have a real opportunity to attract more international visitors and encourage them to stay longer and explore Sligo and the wider north west,” she said.
Cllr Casserly concluded by reiterating her commitment to advancing the tourism potential of the region saying, “I will continue to advocate for Sligo to be at the forefront of these international tourism campaigns and for the north west to be promoted as a destination in its own right.”
