Advent Bazilika Named Europe’s Most Beautiful Christmas Market

The Advent Bazilika Christmas market in Budapest has been named Europe’s Most Beautiful Christmas Market for 2026 by European Best Destinations (EBD). The award ceremony took place in Monaco on October 9, marking another major international recognition for one of the Hungarian capital’s most popular festive attractions.

Advent Bazilika has previously won EBD’s Best Christmas Market award in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024. With its latest victory, it has now emerged from the organization’s “All Stars” category, which brings together previous multiple award winners. The importance of this list is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the Budapest market is also ranked first by American magazine Forbes, said HG Média, the organizer of the Advent Bazilika and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas.

Located in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica on Szent István Square, Advent Bazilika combines traditional Hungarian craftsmanship, gastronomy, and festive entertainment with the striking architecture of the historic church. Nearly 100 artisans offer handmade decorations and gifts, while food stalls serve local specialties such as chimney cake (kürtőskalács), Hungarian flatbread (lángos), sausages, and mulled wine. Visitors can browse the stalls during the day before returning after dark to enjoy the illuminated basilica and spectacular light projections on its façade.

Advent Bazilika has developed over more than 15 years into an internationally recognized Christmas destination. Its central location also makes it easy for visitors to combine a festive outing with Budapest’s other attractions, including its thermal baths, historic cafés, and the Danube riverfront. The nearby Vörösmarty Classic Xmas market, organized by the same team, offers another opportunity to experience the city’s Christmas atmosphere.

The organizer stated that

a key factor in the award’s selection was that the Christmas market in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica combines culture, gastronomy, and crafts with a unique atmosphere created by special lighting, as well as the basilica’s imposing architecture.

“Advent Bazilika has received this recognition many times, and for good reason. It strikes the balance travelers look for in a Christmas market: beauty, a magical atmosphere, and originality. Budapest provides the perfect setting, and Advent Bazilika has become an inseparable part of the city,” said Maximilien Lejeune, CEO of European Best Destinations.

“The event is special because what it promises is consistent with what visitors see and the experience they genuinely expect from such an occasion. Creating this harmony is one of the greatest challenges for any event, and I believe this is why it continues to appeal to travelers year after year,” he added.

This year’s Advent Bazilika Christmas market will open on November 13 in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest.

European Best Destinations has organized tourism competitions across Europe since 2009, involving travelers from around the world. The organization works with more than 500 European destinations to increase their international visibility and appeal. EBD’s shortlist of 40 Christmas markets is compiled based on articles published by independent journalists in leading media outlets. A total of 11,648 travelers then participated in the voting process to determine the winners.
