The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has stepped up security at major railway stations across Southern Railway in view of the Pooja holidays and the upcoming Deepavali festival.
Enhanced security measures have been introduced at the Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Tambaram, Perambur, Katpadi, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tiruchi, and Madurai railway stations to manage the anticipated increase in passenger traffic, the RPF said in a statement.
Uniformed RPF personnel have been deployed on platforms, at ticket booking counters, and on foot overbridges to regulate crowds and ensure passenger safety. Anti-sabotage checks are being conducted frequently, sniffer dogs are being deployed, and CCTV cameras are being monitored round the clock as part of the special security arrangements, the RPF said.
The RPF has also intensified enforcement against the transportation of firecrackers, inflammable materials, narcotic substances, and illicit liquor on trains and railway premises.
Public announcements are being made regularly to alert passengers about pick-pocketing, drugging, and the risks posed by unattended or suspicious baggage and articles.
The RPF has urged passengers to cooperate with security personnel and promptly report any suspicious activity by calling the railway helpline 139.
