Kakao (035720.KS) has strengthened security measures to prevent people from using someone else's identity to create a Kakao Account or to register identity verification information.
Kakao said on the 22nd that it has introduced "My Identity Protection," a feature that lets users directly check and manage the process by which identity verification information is registered to a Kakao Account under their name. When identity verification information is newly registered to a Kakao Account, the feature requires additional verification through an account where the same identity is already registered, heading off damage from identity misuse.
Users can turn the feature on or off through the "Kakao Account → Account Security" menu in KakaoTalk settings or on the Kakao Account website. The additional verification is completed either by selecting "Allow" in a KakaoTalk message sent to the existing account registered under the same identity, or by entering a verification code received by email. This allows users to spot and block attempts to register their identity that they did not request.
Kakao also offers a range of other security features to protect Kakao Accounts, including two-step verification, country-based login restrictions, passkeys and QR code login.
"My Identity Protection is a feature designed so that users can directly check and manage the process of registering their identity," a Kakao official said. "We will continue to strengthen account security features so that users can use their Kakao Accounts more safely."
