LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Lakers are set to open the 2026-27 regular season on Wednesday night against the Golden State Warriors, and one of the biggest questions surrounding the team in the final days of training camp was the injury status of Collin Sexton.
Collin Sexton was sidelined for the entirety of preseason due to what was described as a lower leg injury, and he only recently begun participating fully during Lakers practice. With the first injury report of the season released, the nine-year veteran was officially listed as questionable against the Warriors due to a right soleus strain. Second-year wing Adou Thiero (left knee effusion) and rookie guard Cameron Carr (right oblique strain) were both ruled out.
Following Lakers’ practice on Monday, Sexton spoke to reporters for the first time since Media Day, and acknowledged that while he was certainly feeling better in terms of the injury, playing in the season opener was not a forgone conclusion.

“We’re taking it day by day,” Sexton said after Lakers’ practice on Monday. “I had a really good practice … it felt good. Super excited to be back out there with the guys, so I look forward to it.”
Sexton was signed by the Lakers in the offseason via free agency after splitting last year between the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls. He’s coming off a season in which he averaged a combined 15.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals with splits of 48.5 percent shooting from the field, 40.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 85.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
The expectation coming into the regular season was that he would anchor the second unit as the primary ball-handler. Without him available for preseason, the Lakers’ reserve ball-handling was shaky, leading to head coach JJ Redick to bring Quentin Grimes off the bench in the final preseason game to help alleviate the turnover issues.
While observing from the sidelines, Sexton is well aware of how he can help the team, and he’s just looking forward to getting out on the court in official capacity.
“Super eager, I’m super eager,” Sexton exclaimed. “But I have to just continue to take it day by day and continue to do the work in the weight room as well as the work on the training room table.”
