The father of the doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has questioned the CBI after the Supreme Court granted bail to former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
He said on Saturday that the agency must be held accountable for its actions. The Supreme Court had on Thursday granted Ghosh bail in a case involving alleged financial irregularities at the hospital.
Ghosh was arrested amid widespread protests over the rape and murder of the doctor at the hospital on August 9, 2024.
According to PTI, the victim's father said, "If an agency trusted by 147 crore people has such shortcomings, how can people continue to repose faith in it?" He maintained that the government could not be held directly responsible as the CBI was an independent investigating agency.
The victim's mother, Ratna Debnath, is now a BJP MLA.
The Supreme Court's decision also drew strong criticism from doctors associated with the movement seeking justice for the victim. Dr Utpal Bandyopadhyay demanded that the CBI publicly explain the delay in the case.
Bandyopadhyay said the bail order had caused deep disappointment, anguish and anger among those seeking justice. He called for the trial to be completed quickly in a fast-track court.
He also demanded swift action against all those allegedly involved in the crime and in creating an environment of corruption and intimidation in the state health department.
Dr Aniket Mahato, another prominent member of the movement, said the development was deeply distressing for those who had protested on the streets for justice and continued to pursue the cause.
Mahato alleged lapses in the CBI's investigation into the corruption case. He told ABP Ananda that the agency had listed 147 people as witnesses but had examined only seven of them over the past two years.
He accused the agency of incompetence and alleged that the prolonged proceedings had weakened the case.
Ghosh had moved the Supreme Court after a special CBI court rejected his bail pleas and the Calcutta High Court dismissed his petition, PTI reported.
A Sealdah court granted him bail in the rape and murder case in December 2024 after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period. However, he remained in custody in connection with the financial irregularities case.
The Supreme Court's decision to grant Ghosh bail in that case has prompted the victim's father and doctors involved in the justice movement to question the CBI's handling of the investigation and seek faster proceedings.
