Edmond Memorial 3, Edmond North 1
Averie Mannschreck and her Edmond Memorial teammates knew it would be an emotional match.
The Bulldogs weren’t just playing with their season on the line Friday.
They were also facing a bitter rival in Edmond North, and a rowdy gymnasium in Noble only made it that much more intense.
“We just knew that if we were consistent with how we acted, and we just did strong pushes at the beginning, that they would crumble,” Mannschreck said.
Edmond North ultimately did crumble.
With Mannschreck and sophomore Audrey-Kate Bajema leading the charge, third-ranked Edmond Memorial overpowered No. 7 Edmond North in a 3-1 victory and will play for the title against the Broken Arrow-Jenks winner at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Mannschreck — a senior Biola University commit — had 15 kills, while Bajema had 16 for Edmond Memorial, which has won two consecutive titles and will make its fifth straight championship appearance.
Senior Addi Levescy, a Black Hills State commit, also stood out for the Bulldogs while helping lead the defense.
“Our grit — it was so good,” Mannschreck said. “And the way our team really just worked together. There were moments that we kind of dipped, and we just shut that down and we just went full force and we stayed together as a team. Our energy was consistent throughout the whole thing and our effort was so good.”
Edmond Memorial (27-9) and Edmond North (26-11) played each other twice in the regular season, and each team won a match.
Edmond Memorial coach Kortney Jones knew the Huskies’ strengths and weaknesses, and the Bulldogs had a specific game plan.
“They have outside (hitter) Kate Starr,” Jones said. “She’s a stud. They have two really good middles that they run it fast. We have some young middles, so we really harped on, hey, we gotta stop their middle, we gotta stop Kate. When Kate’s in the back row, that’s when we push. And so I think they executed it beautifully.”
