When power goes out suddenly, your smartphone becomes a vital lifeline for news, weather updates, and reaching loved ones. However, standard background tasks and continuous radio searches rapidly drain limited battery reserves. By executing a few targeted setting changes as soon as the lights go out, you can dramatically extend your device's operational life.
"Many people panic when the power fails, but a few simple changes to your phone settings can make a huge difference," says Marcus Clarke, founder of The Prepared Household. "These aren't just about saving battery; they're about ensuring you can reach emergency services or loved ones when it truly matters."
1. Enable Low Power Mode or Battery Saver immediately
The single most effective step to extend battery life during a power outage is forcing your device into a low-energy operational state. Standard smartphone operation runs continuous background synchronization, email polling, and visual effects that waste power when idle.
"This is your first port of call," Clarke explains. "It's designed specifically for this purpose, cutting out many of the power-hungry processes you won't need in an emergency."
To turn this on on an iPhone: open Settings, select Battery, Power Mode, and toggle on Low Power Mode. On Android devices: swipe down from the top of your screen to open Quick Settings and tap Battery Saver (or Power Saving Mode).
This immediately throttles CPU performance, pauses background app refresh, and stops cloud backups.
2. Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to stop continuous signal scanning
During a grid failure, local cell towers and Wi-Fi networks often lose power or become severely congested, forcing your phone's internal antennas to boost transmission power to maintain a link. Leaving wireless radios active causes constant, aggressive network searching that drains battery reserves rapidly.
"Unless you're connected to a portable Wi Fi hotspot or using a Bluetooth device, these should be off," Clarke notes. "Your phone will spend less energy searching for signals that aren't there."
To disable these features, open Settings, select Wi-Fi, and toggle the switch to Off. Then return to Settings, tap Bluetooth, and toggle it to Off as well.
Avoid relying solely on Control Center or Quick Settings shortcuts for this step, as those toggles often only temporarily disconnect devices rather than powering off the scanning hardware completely.
3. Lower screen brightness and shorten auto-lock duration
Display panels, whether OLED or LCD, are consistently the single largest consumers of battery power on any mobile device. High brightness levels and long screen-timeout windows burn through energy every time you check for updates.
"The brighter your screen and the longer it stays on, the faster your battery depletes," Clarke adds. "Make every second count by conserving screen time."
To adjust this, open Settings and look for your screen options:
For iPhone: Go to Display & Brightness and manually drag the brightness slider to its lowest level, then go to Appearance and switch on Dark Mode. To prevent the phone from overriding your choice, go back to the main menu and tap Accessibility, Display & Text Size, then scroll to the bottom to toggle off Auto-Brightness.
For Android: Go to Display (or Display & Brightness), toggle off Adaptive Brightness, turn on Dark Mode, and drag the slider down.
Finally, fix the screen timer. On iOS, stay in the Display & Brightness menu, tap Auto-Lock, and set it to 30 seconds. On Android, find Screen Timeout within the Display menu and drop it to 15 or 30 seconds so the screen shuts off immediately when not in active use.
4. Enable Do Not Disturb to block non-essential notifications
Every incoming app ping, push notification, and social media alert lights up your screen, triggers vibration motors, and forces the main processor to wake up from an idle state. Silencing non-urgent application updates prevents unnecessary hardware wake-ups while keeping cellular channels open for critical incoming calls or texts.
"Prioritize what gets through," Clarke advises. "You want to be contactable, but not bothered by every trivial update that can wait until the power is restored."
On iPhone, open Settings, tap Focus, select Do Not Disturb, and switch it on. On Android, swipe down to open Quick Settings and tap Do Not Disturb. Be sure to check the settings menu under Do Not Disturb to allow calls from emergency contacts or repeated callers so critical communications still reach you.
"Being prepared isn't just about having supplies; it's about knowing how to make the most of the tools you already have," Clarke concludes.
