The head of Serbia’s Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) said that at least 11 proceedings were underway for suspected election campaign violations.

REM Council President Stevica Smederevac said the proceedings were initiated against public broadcasters, national TV channels and cable operators. He added that opening proceedings does not establish that a broadcaster has broken the law but is just the first step in determining whether a violation occurred.
Smederevac said the REM gets complaints from members of the general public and others daily through it’s website and the mail. The regulator's Supervision and Analysis Service checks whether complaints are complete and requests additional documentation or recordings when necessary.
He said the number of proceedings changed daily as the service completes its reports and added that the REM Council as the governing body is holding almost daily meetings to address cases without delay.
Possible sanctions range from warnings and temporary restrictions on content to suspending a program for one to seven days for repeated violations, with licence revocation the most severe measure. Smederevac said REM also plans to meet broadcasters under scrutiny to discuss potential breaches and prevent further violations.
