Wausau, Wis.-based Aspirus Health will end hospice care at its eight-bed Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff, Wis., and shift hospice care to patients’ homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and other community settings.
The system made the “difficult decision after carefully evaluating patient needs, utilization, staffing requirements and the long-term sustainability of the eight-bed hospice house,” according to an Oct. 15 system news release. The house serves an average of about four patients a day but requires staff coverage around the clock. Sustained low demand, significant staffing needs and rising care delivery costs made the facility difficult to maintain, the system said.
The Aspirus at Home hospice team will continue to care for current patents and create personalized transition plans. A final service date has not been set and will depend on the needs of current patients, the release said.
