Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari, who is visiting the homes of those who died in the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal stampede on October 17, said on Sunday that minister Umesh Rai will go to Bihar to meet the families of two deceased persons.
Of the 19 people who died in the tragedy while visiting the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal amid a sudden downpour, 17 were from West Bengal, and two were from neighbouring Bihar's Muzaffarpur district.
"I am sending Minister of State Umesh Rai to Muzaffarpur with compensation cheques," he told reporters after visiting the residence of Kalpana Jana, a victim of the October 17 incident at Chorbagan in north Kolkata.
The chief minister said that with Sunday's visit to the Jana residence at Ramnagar in Purba Medinipur district, he has met all 17 families at their homes in West Bengal.
"Like the families of the deceased, the government is also pained," he said.
"I told her children that, like their father and uncles, I am also with them, and in case of any requirement, they can contact me," he said.
The West Bengal government has constituted a six-member SIT headed by retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Anindita Roy Saraswati, to conduct an inquiry into the stampede and make appropriate recommendations.
He reiterated that a report to be filed by the SIT, which has been given a time period of three months, will be tabled before the state Assembly.
