New York: US President Donald Trump is exploring a range of measures to bring down fuel prices as the ongoing conflict with Iran pushes petrol prices higher, with the national average for regular gasoline reaching around $4.50 per gallon.
The administration is looking at international energy partnerships, increased oil supplies and domestic policy measures to ease pressure on consumers, as rising fuel costs become an economic and political concern.
One of the key initiatives involves strengthening energy cooperation with India. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently visited Reliance Industries’ refining complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, to discuss opportunities for processing additional crude oil, including heavy Venezuelan crude.
The Jamnagar facility is the world’s largest single-site oil refining complex, with substantial capacity to process different grades of crude. Rubio said Indian refiners were well equipped to handle heavy crude and could process greater volumes of Venezuelan oil as supplies become available.
The move reflects Washington’s efforts to expand the global market for oil and improve supply availability amid disruptions caused by the conflict. India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, also offers significant refining capacity and an established market for international crude supplies.
Trump has also highlighted a proposed $300 billion investment linked to plans for a major refinery at the Port of Brownsville in Texas. The project has been presented as a potential boost to US refining capacity and energy infrastructure.
Another measure involves easing restrictions affecting countries purchasing Russian oil. The administration temporarily suspended threatened tariff measures targeting major buyers, including India and China, while moves to facilitate additional Russian fuel supplies have also been discussed. Increasing the availability of crude oil and refined products could help relieve pressure on international markets.
Domestically, the administration has pursued several measures intended to improve fuel availability and moderate prices. These include expanding access to red-dyed diesel for certain uses, waiving provisions of the Jones Act to facilitate domestic fuel transportation and drawing on the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Officials have also considered temporarily suspending the federal gasoline tax, which stands at 18.4 cents per gallon, alongside the 24.4-cent federal tax on diesel. Such a suspension could provide some relief at the pump, although the extent to which the savings would be passed on to consumers would depend on market conditions.
However, analysts have pointed to the limitations of these measures. Tax relief may offer only modest savings, while releasing emergency oil reserves can increase short-term supply without necessarily addressing the underlying causes of elevated global energy prices.
The conflict with Iran remains a major factor influencing oil markets, with disruptions to production and shipping routes contributing to uncertainty over supplies and costs.
Trump has said the war could end quickly and has linked a resolution of the conflict to the prospect of lower fuel prices. A sustained reduction in geopolitical tensions could ease pressure on crude oil prices, although the speed and scale of any decline in petrol prices would depend on global supply, refining capacity and distribution costs.
With fuel prices weighing on household budgets, the administration faces pressure to demonstrate that its measures can deliver meaningful relief. Its approach combines efforts to secure additional international supplies with domestic interventions, while the outlook for prices remains closely tied to developments in the Middle East.
