The encouraging part of Thursday’s Giants injury report was the number of players who returned to work. Tremaine Edmunds wasn’t one of them.
Edmunds missed a second consecutive practice with a shoulder injury, according to the Giants’ Week 7 report. The club had not issued its Friday game designations when this article was prepared. Two absences warrant a contingency plan; they do not establish that he will miss Houston or that the injury is long term.
New York should prepare that contingency around the middle-linebacker job itself, rather than simply ask Arvell Reese to absorb everything a missing veteran would leave behind.

The Giants have a replacement listed, not a replacement proven
The team’s published defensive depth chart lists Micah McFadden behind Edmunds at middle linebacker and Reese at weakside linebacker. Those are different assignments. Treating the injury as an automatic promotion for Reese would skip the question of who handles Edmunds’ actual work.
That chart isn’t a declaration of Sunday’s lineup, and it doesn’t explain the communication responsibilities in every package. It does provide a better starting point than assuming one promising rookie must solve a problem at every linebacker position.
Edmunds has started all six games and recorded 50 combined tackles and two sacks. Those totals don’t grade his coverage or make him irreplaceable. They show that the Giants would be replacing a regular starter, not a player who has barely participated.
The practical recommendation is straightforward: use the available preparation time to establish a clear first replacement, then test the calls and checks with the other defenders who would actually share the field. Keeping Reese’s responsibilities recognizable could matter more than giving him a larger collection of them.
0What do you think?Post a comment.Houston preparation also comes with uncertainty elsewhere. Cornerback Greg Newsome II remained out Thursday with a concussion, while safety Jevon Holland returned on a limited, non-contact basis. Moving several defenders into unfamiliar responsibilities at once would make the problem harder to diagnose if something breaks down.
There is an obvious alternative: if Edmunds is available and able to do his normal work, preserve the regular arrangement. John Harbaugh hasn’t announced a replacement, and this isn’t a report that McFadden has been handed the start.
The Giants don’t need to turn a Thursday absence into a Sunday certainty. They do need a plan that explains who replaces the middle linebacker, instead of a vague expectation that the rest of the defense will figure it out.
