Kenya Opposition Leader Kalonzo Explained

KENYA · ANALYSIS

Kalonzo Musyoka is the former vice president who has backed Raila Odinga’s presidential bids three times and now says he is the man to beat President William Ruto in August 2027.

Kalonzo Musyoka is a veteran Kenyan opposition leader who declared himself President William Ruto’s main rival on Saturday 24 October 2026, the day Ruto said God uses him to publicise government projects. This guide explains who he is, what he did in past elections, how many voters his home region holds and why the contest matters beyond Kenya.

Our news report on the exchange is “Kenya’s President Says God Uses His Rival”. The United States designated Kenya a major non-NATO ally in June 2024, so who wins in August 2027 matters to Washington.

Who Kalonzo Musyoka Is

Kalonzo Musyoka was Kenya’s vice president from January 2008 under President Mwai Kibaki, who appointed him after the disputed 2007 elections, Kenyans.co.ke reports. He held the post until Tuesday 9 April 2013, having run in that year’s election as Raila Odinga’s running mate, Capital FM reported.

In July 2019 President Uhuru Kenyatta named him special envoy to monitor peace in South Sudan, according to a Foreign Affairs Ministry letter dated 2 July, The East African reported. The same report says he had earlier been involved in mediation efforts in South Sudan and Somalia.

He leads the Wiper Patriotic Front, which the Registrar of Political Parties renamed in 2025 from Wiper Democratic Movement. Capital FM now describes him as leader of both that party and the Ukombozi Alliance, the coalition that was Azimio la Umoja until September 2026.

His Record in Presidential Races

Kalonzo was a presidential candidate in 2007 for ODM-Kenya, the party that later became Wiper. In 2017 he ran as Raila Odinga’s running mate, and in March 2022 he described backing Odinga again as the third time he had done so, Capital FM reported.

In 2022 Odinga chose Martha Karua rather than Kalonzo as his running mate, and Kalonzo left the Azimio coalition for about a month before deciding in early June to rejoin it, Capital FM reported. The Standard’s report on the launch of Azimio’s manifesto on Monday 6 June, which he attended, carried the headline “I pledge my unequivocal support for Raila Odinga.”

Odinga gave him the nickname “watermelon”, a jibe at his indecisiveness, Kalonzo told KTN in March 2022, Capital FM reported. In January 2024 he declared that he would contest the 2027 race and “will no longer support Raila or any other candidate,” The Standard reported.

Citizen Digital reported that he also told The Standard, “Nothing will stop me, not even Azimio member parties fielding candidates.” He added that in 2022 he decided not to run in favour of Odinga but does not “expect any payback from him.”

Where His Votes Come From

The electoral commission’s register for the 2022 election listed 687,565 voters in Machakos, 532,758 in Kitui and 479,401 in Makueni. Together that is 1,699,724 of the 22,102,532 voters on the county register, about 7.7%.

At 7.7% of the register, Ukambani cannot elect a president on its own, although its three counties together hold more voters than Kiambu’s 1,275,008. Article 138 of the Constitution also requires a winner to take at least 25% of the vote in more than half of the 47 counties, so a candidate has to win well beyond a home region.

These are the 2022 figures, and the register for 2027 may differ. The Constitution also demands nominations from at least 2,000 voters in each of a majority of counties, which forces every campaign to build a national network.

The Opposition Field in 2027

Capital FM describes Kalonzo as a co-principal of the United Opposition alongside Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua and Fred Matiang’i. Gachagua, a former deputy president, unveiled the Democracy for Citizens’ Party, Karua rebranded her party as the People’s Liberation Party, and Matiang’i, a former interior minister, now leads Jubilee.

Former president Uhuru Kenyatta resigned as chair of the coalition’s council in a letter dated Monday 5 October 2026, after Matiang’i took over the Jubilee Party, Citizen Digital reported. Kalonzo replied that there was “no vacuum at the helm of Ukombozi” and that his own office as party leader was unaffected.

In June 2026 Kalonzo unveiled a 13-point presidential agenda that promises anti-corruption audits, tax reforms to ease the cost of living, police reform and 6,000 megawatts of electricity capacity. He said he chose to launch his own platform before involving his co-principals, Capital FM reported.

Why the Contest Matters Beyond Kenya

Kenya’s elections carry a heavy history: the International Criminal Court says its prosecutor contended that more than 1,000 people were killed and about 350,000 displaced in the violence after the 2007 vote. That is why a disputed result in August 2027 would be watched closely well beyond Nairobi.

Kalonzo’s record is regional as well as national, with envoy work on South Sudan under President Kenyatta. In February 2025 The Standard reported that he criticised Ruto’s role in the Congo peace talks and claimed Ruto failed to support Kenyatta when he was the East African Community’s peace envoy.

Ruto is seeking a second term, and Article 142 of the Constitution bars anyone from holding the presidency for more than two terms, so the winner in August 2027 could serve until the next scheduled vote in 2032. If no candidate clears the thresholds described above, Article 138 requires a fresh election within 30 days, in which normally only the two leading candidates stand.

What It Means for US Readers

Presidential Determination 2024-05, signed by then President Joe Biden on Monday 24 June 2024 and published in the Federal Register on Friday 12 July 2024, designates Kenya a major non-NATO ally under US arms-export and foreign-assistance law. That status signals close US security ties, so the identity of Kenya’s next president and the fairness of the vote matter to US planners.

“Exercise increased caution in Kenya due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping.”
US State Department travel advisory for Kenya

The official campaign period runs from Saturday 29 May to Saturday 7 August 2027, so travellers heading to Kenya in mid-2027 should check the advisory and any US Embassy alerts before they book. Investors will watch whether the opposition unites behind Kalonzo or another leader, although Capital FM’s summary of his agenda gives no costings.

Kalonzo’s agenda promises an “interest-based approach” to foreign policy and deeper engagement in the East African Community and the African Union, Capital FM reported. The summary reviewed does not mention the United States, so how he would manage the security partnership is not known.

What Is Not Known

It is not known whether the opposition will back Kalonzo or another leader, or when it will decide. Ruto praised Kalonzo and Kalonzo answered that Ruto’s days are numbered, and no outlet reviewed reports a deal between them.

The Rio Times could not confirm Kalonzo’s 2007 vote share at an official source, so this guide gives no figure. Voter numbers here come from the 2022 register, and the commission has not published a 2027 register in the sources reviewed.

Kenya’s next election date also faces a legal footnote: a Malindi High Court judgment of Friday 7 August 2026 held that the presidential vote should have been held on Tuesday 11 August 2026, but its declaration was suspended until after the 2027 election, Capital FM and Kenyans.co.ke reported. Electoral commissioner Ann Nderitu said the suspension keeps Tuesday 10 August 2027 in force, Kenyans.co.ke reported, and the commission’s website still lists that date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Kalonzo Musyoka?

Kalonzo Musyoka is a veteran Kenyan politician who was vice president from 2008 to 2013. He now leads the Wiper Patriotic Front and the opposition Ukombozi Alliance.

Has Kalonzo ever run for president?

Yes, he was a presidential candidate in 2007 for ODM-Kenya. In 2013 and 2017 he ran as Raila Odinga’s running mate, and in 2022 he again backed Odinga instead of running.

Is Kalonzo the opposition’s candidate for 2027?

The opposition has not named one candidate. Kalonzo calls himself Ruto’s main rival and has unveiled his own 13-point agenda.

When is Kenya’s next election?

Kenya votes on Tuesday 10 August 2027, according to the electoral commission’s website. A president needs more than half of all votes and at least 25% in more than half of the 47 counties.

How many voters live in Kalonzo’s home region?

Machakos, Kitui and Makueni counties had 1,699,724 registered voters in 2022, about 7.7% of the national total. That is not enough to win alone, so any candidate must win support in other regions.

Why does Kalonzo matter to Americans?

The United States named Kenya a major non-NATO ally in June 2024, so the 2027 result matters to US security and diplomacy. Kalonzo has also worked as a regional peace envoy for South Sudan.
