The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Independence Bridge as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent repair works on the major Lagos Island corridor.
The diversion is scheduled to commence on Friday, October 16, 2026, with motorists advised to plan their journeys and expect possible delays throughout the repair period.
The Lagos State Ministry of Works, in a statement issued on Thursday, said the asphalt works would begin at night on Friday and continue throughout Saturday and Sunday.
According to the ministry, the repairs are expected to be completed by Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The statement said traffic management measures had been put in place to minimise disruption, with the inbound and outbound sections of the bridge to be partially closed in phases.
“Traffic will be diverted on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works commences urgent repairs of the bridge,” the statement said.
It added that one lane would remain open at a time to allow motorists access to their destinations while repair activities are ongoing.
The state government urged motorists to consider alternative routes and make necessary adjustments to their travel plans to avoid being caught in traffic around the bridge.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to the area to regulate traffic, manage diversions and reduce congestion during the exercise.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic management officials and comply with temporary traffic arrangements.
“Motorists are implored to remain patient, obey traffic laws, and cooperate fully with the interventions made available,” Osiyemi said.
The Independence Bridge is an important transport link serving traffic into and out of Lagos Island, making the repair exercise potentially significant for commuters and motorists who use the corridor, particularly during peak travel periods.
The state government therefore advised road users to allow extra travel time and use alternative routes where possible while the maintenance work lasts.
