A 24-year-old Bangladeshi man from Cumilla, who reportedly quit his job at a bakery in Russia to join the Russian army for a promised Tk 30 lakh, has died in the Russia-Ukraine war, his family claims.
Sagar, from Chhaykot under Chandina municipality, had been working at the bakery for a monthly salary of Tk 70,000 before enlisting in May this year.
His family said a Bangladeshi middleman had offered him Tk 30 lakh to join the Russian army.
On Saturday night, one of Sagar’s friends in Russia informed his sister of his death through a text message.
The family has yet to learn how he died or whether arrangements are being made to repatriate his body.
Sagar went to Russia in mid-2025 after his family allegedly paid Tk 6 lakh to a local agent to arrange his travel.
His uncle, Abdul Awal, said he had warned Sagar against joining the army, but he did not listen.
Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nuruzzaman said he learnt of the incident through the media and was looking into it.
Chandina Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Ashraful Haque said the administration would provide necessary assistance.
