The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has expressed concern over what it described as “self-imposed indiscretion” and disrespect for the Office of the President by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a press statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Alake, the campaign council faulted Atiku’s decision to publicly address President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a first-name basis as “Bola.”
Alake noted that while a higher standard of decorum, decency, and deference to constituted authorities is expected from a former Vice President and presidential aspirant, Atiku has fallen short of those expectations.
According to the council, political animosity and unbridled ambition have compromised the statesmanship expected to guide Atiku’s public conduct since the last general election.
“Alhaji Atiku, for reasons best known to him alone, chose, rather than being a good example of decency in political behavior, to set himself up as a model of a politician the younger generation of political actors should never aspire to emulate,” Alake stated.
However, despite Atiku’s conduct, the APC Presidential Campaign Council has directed all party leaders, spokespersons, members, and support groups to continue showing the former Vice President the courtesy and regard due to his status as a former high-ranking national officer and presidential candidate.
Alake emphasized that the APC remains committed to progressive ideals and traditional African values of respect, confirming that the campaign council will not resort to similar conduct.
“Our campaign will focus on issues important to Nigerians,” Alake said. “We will sell our party programs, President Bola Tinubu’s achievements in office, and how the administration is moving Nigeria from reforms to prosperity as the President seeks a second-term mandate from Nigerians.”
