Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) has begun selling the all-new Tucson, its first full redesign of the compact sport utility vehicle in six years, with prices starting at 31.4 million won ($21,900). The model arrives amid debate over the new Avante, whose fully loaded version tops 40 million won, and the Tucson's starting price has risen 2.96 million won from the outgoing model. Even so, Hyundai kept the entry price in the low 30-million-won range while enlarging the body and fitting Pleos Connect as standard from the base trim.
Hyundai Motor said on the 21st that it had disclosed the main specifications and prices of the all-new Tucson and started taking orders. The Tucson is Hyundai's flagship SUV, with cumulative global sales surpassing 10 million units. This is the fifth-generation full redesign, the first in six years.
The Tucson comes with two powertrains, a 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine and a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid. Four trims are offered: H-Pick, Exclusive, Inspiration and XRT.
Prices start at 31.4 million won for the 1.6 turbo gasoline version, up 2.96 million won from 28.44 million won for the previous model. The hybrid starts at 36.15 million won for the 1.6 turbo, based on tax incentives.
Hyundai said it priced the base H-Pick trim on par with the mainstay trim of the previous Tucson while raising the vehicle's overall appeal with a roomier cabin, improved driving performance and standard Pleos Connect along with safety and convenience features.
The biggest change is the larger body. The vehicle is 4,700 millimeters long, 60 millimeters more than before; 1,905 millimeters wide, up 40 millimeters; and has a wheelbase of 2,785 millimeters, 30 millimeters longer.
Hyundai also fitted Pleos Connect from the base H-Pick trim. The automaker added a range of safety and convenience features favored by customers, including its first dual power supply for door unlocking and pedal misapplication safety assist.
"The all-new Tucson is an SUV that adds advanced technology and practicality to a bold design, giving customers confidence across their varied daily lives," a Hyundai official said.
