Rex Omar and Mr Drew
Musician and Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) executive Rex Omar says he has never heard of musician Mr Drew following complaints about unpaid royalties.
Mr Drew recently told GHOne TV that he had not received royalties from his music.
Reacting to the issue on Okay FM on Wednesday, Rex Omar questioned whether Mr Drew was a registered member of GHAMRO and had completed the necessary procedures to receive royalties.
“I have never heard his name before,” he said.
He compared the situation to buying a car without registering for insurance and later expecting compensation after an accident.
Rex Omar explained that musicians must register their works with GHAMRO and assign their music rights to the organisation to enable it to manage and collect royalties on their behalf.
“Is he a member of GHAMRO? Has he gone to GHAMRO to fill out a form and sign over his music rights? You have to assign your music rights to GHAMRO to enable the organisation to protect your songs,” he stated.
He added that musicians who fail to follow the required procedures should not expect the organisation to pay them royalties.
“So, if you have not assigned your rights to GHAMRO, how do you expect the organisation to pay you royalties? If you are a musician and you do not do the right thing, do not expect anything from GHAMRO,” he said.
