- The Department of Basic Education is now fighting to ensure the learner does not have to rewrite the affected paper

The principal, who was also serving as the school's chief invigilator, was removed from the post with immediate effect once the incident came to light. A deputy principal has since been appointed to take over invigilator duties for the remainder of the examination period.
The affected learner has been provided with psycho-social support following the ordeal, and arrangements have been made for her to continue writing her remaining papers. The department confirmed it is working urgently to finalise the necessary reports for submission to Umalusi through the DBE, requesting a concession for English First Additional Language Paper 3. The aim is to secure approval that would spare the pupil from having to rewrite the paper in June 2027.
Matriculant can write exam with outstanding fees
The incident surfaced during the opening stretch of the 2026 matric examination season, a period the DBE had already flagged as one requiring strict adherence to examination regulations. eNCA reported on the matter on 23 October, noting that the department had also taken the opportunity to remind schools that learners may not be barred from writing examinations because of outstanding school fees, a practice that remains a concern in some parts of the country. Watch a court ruling on the matter:
For many South African families, matric results carry enormous weight, representing years of sacrifice and the gateway to further education and employment. Being denied access to an exam room, whatever the reason, can have consequences that extend far beyond a single paper. The investigation into the principal's conduct is ongoing, and the outcome of the Umalusi concession request is still subject to approval.
