Greece plans to close 187 of its 831 military camps as part of an updated force structure for 2026-2035. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias briefed members of the Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs in a closed-door session, stressing savings from consolidating units and camps and the integration of new technologies.
The camps to be shut staff no more than 30% of planned personnel, and their operational importance was judged limited, sources said.
Closing them is estimated to save about €100 million annually, and €1.7 billion over a decade.
The money would go toward a housing program for armed forces personnel and small procurement programs. Staffing at the critical units could approach 70% in peacetime.
The update also incorporates new units focused on cybersecurity, electronic intelligence, space applications and human-source intelligence, plus a multilayered air defense dome known as the Achilles Shield. [via kathimerini.gr]
