A couple died from burn injuries after a fire caused by a gas cylinder leak at their rented home in Tongi, Gazipur, while their 16-year-old daughter remains in critical condition.
The couple died while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka yesterday (21 October) night.
Their daughter, Tanisha, who also suffered severe burns in the incident, is undergoing treatment at the hospital's intensive care unit.
The deceased were identified as Lal Chan Mia, 60, son of Mannach Ali of Kuripara area under Phulpur upazila in Mymensingh, and his wife Nasima, 50.
They had been living in a rented house owned by Fakhrul Hasan near Master Bari in Mudafa area of Ward 52 under Tongi West Police Station and worked at garment factories.
According to sources, the fire broke out around 6am yesterday when a family member went to the kitchen to cook.
Sources further said it is suspected that gas had accumulated inside the house due to a leak in the gas line. When the stove was lit, the accumulated gas caught fire and spread through the room, leaving all three family members severely burnt.
Locals rescued them and took them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
Sources said no signs of an explosion were found inside the house.
