Religion in Kenya Explained

GUIDES · KENYA

Kenya religion is overwhelmingly Christian, with a large Muslim minority concentrated on the coast and in the north-east. For US readers, faith matters because churches and mosques shape elections, health care, schools and travel safety.

Kenya Religion in Numbers

The latest national count is the 2019 census. The US State Department, in its 2022 report on religious freedom, gives the government’s 2019 estimate as about 85.5 percent Christian and 11 percent Muslim.

Among Christians, non-evangelical Protestants were about 33 percent of the population and Roman Catholics about 21 percent. Evangelical Protestants, African-instituted churches and Orthodox churches together made up about 32 percent.

Hindus, Sikhs, Baha’is and followers of traditional African religions each account for less than 2 percent. The census also found about 755,000 people who said they were atheist or had no religion.

Faith follows geography and ethnicity. Most Muslims live in the north-east and on the coast, and the State Department says ethnic Somalis and Swahilis in the coastal region account for a majority of Muslims.

The five largest ethnic groups, the Kikuyu, Luhya, Kalenjin, Luo and Kamba, are predominantly Christian. Our Kenya Population 2026, Ethnic Groups and Faiths guide sets out the wider census picture.

Every share above dates from 2019 and is a rounded State Department figure, so the full KNBS tables may differ by a few tenths of a point. A later count may shift the balance between Protestant, Catholic and Muslim communities.

The Catholic Church: Schools, Hospitals and Bishops

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) lists 28 Catholic jurisdictions in the country. They are four archdioceses, 23 dioceses and one military ordinariate.

Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba of Kisumu is the KCCB chairman, with Archbishop Anthony Muheria of Nyeri as vice-chairman. Archbishop Philip Anyolo leads Nairobi and Archbishop Martin Kivuva Musonde leads Mombasa.

The Church is also a major provider of services. The KCCB says its Catholic Health Department supplies about 25 percent of health care in Kenya through 451 health units.

A national commission set up in 1961 guides religious education in Catholic-sponsored schools. Caritas Kenya, the Church’s development arm, runs humanitarian and social programmes.

The bishops also speak on public life. In a statement of Thursday 16 April 2026 they cited the Shakahola and Kware deaths as proof of weak state surveillance.

They also called bodies found in Kilifi and Kericho deeply disturbing. The statement followed a meeting of the bishops in Karen, Nairobi.

Protestant, Anglican and Evangelical Churches

Protestants form the largest Christian group, spread across older mission churches and newer evangelical congregations. African-instituted churches are churches founded by Africans rather than by foreign missions.

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) says it has 37 dioceses. Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has led it since he was elected on 20 May 2016 and consecrated on 3 July 2016.

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) describes itself as a family of Christian communions and organisations. It says it was founded in June 1913 at a missionary conference at Thogoto, near Nairobi.

The State Department said in its 2022 report that the new president and deputy president were both tied to evangelical churches. After their September 2022 inauguration the new government held prayer services at State House, and some observers raised concerns about blurring church and state.

Muslims on the Coast and in the North-East

Muslims are about 11 percent of Kenyans, and most live in the north-east and on the coast. There are also significant Muslim communities in parts of Nairobi and in western Kenya.

The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) is a national Muslim organisation with its headquarters in Nairobi. Its National Chairman, Al-Hajj Hassan Ole Naado, issued a communique after a national Muslim leaders forum in the capital on 15 October 2026.

At the forum SUPKEM launched the Ummatic Policy Liaison Directorate, a permanent unit meant to link the Muslim community with ministries and the National Treasury. The leaders said they were willing to strengthen ties with the current government.

The constitution creates Kadhis’ courts under a Chief Kadhi. They decide questions of Muslim law on personal status, marriage, divorce and inheritance, but only when all parties are Muslim.

Kenyan Muslims also travel each year on the Hajj to Saudi Arabia. In June 2026 the Kenya Hajj Mission met at SUPKEM headquarters and opened registration for the 2027 Hajj.

It kept 14 accredited agents, each with at least 300 pilgrims. Saudi authorities have ended Class D tents in Mina, so pilgrims will choose only Class A, B or C.

Lamu Old Town, listed by UNESCO in 2001, has long been a centre of Islamic and Swahili learning. UNESCO names the annual Maulidi festival among its religious functions.

Human rights and Muslim groups said in 2022 that counterterrorism efforts disproportionately affected Muslims, especially ethnic Somalis. Kenyan Somalis and Nubians also reported trouble obtaining national identity cards.

Al-Shabaab, a Somali militant group, has attacked churches, security posts and villages since October 2011, mostly in border areas. Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a UK rights group, lists July 2026 attacks in Mandera County.

One ambush on 28 July killed five counter-terrorism officers. In July 2026 a Kenyan raid in Mandera County killed 11 suspected militants, the group reports.

Other Faiths and People Without Religion

Hindus, Sikhs, Baha’is and followers of traditional religions are small minorities. Indigenous and traditional groups are not required to register, and many do not.

A former MP, Stephen Ndichu, petitioned a court in September 2022 to suspend the registration of Atheists in Kenya, a society of nonbelievers. The society said the case followed its criticism of the First Lady for hosting religious services at State House.

Schools that follow the national curriculum offer religious education in Christian, Muslim or Hindu teachings, plus ethics. In March 2022 the Ministry of Education told schools to stop enforcing hijab bans and forced religious subjects.

What the Constitution and the Law Say

Article 8 of the 2010 constitution says there shall be no state religion. Article 32 protects freedom of conscience, religion, belief and opinion, including the observance of a day of worship.

Article 27 bars the state from discriminating on grounds that include religion, conscience and belief. Article 32 also says nobody may be denied a job or access to an institution because of their belief.

New religious groups, places of worship and faith-based charities must register with the Registrar of Societies, which reports to the Attorney General’s office. Registered bodies may apply for tax-exempt status, including relief on imported goods.

The government lifted a seven-year ban on registering new religious societies in June 2022, the State Department reports. Guidelines issued on 13 July 2022 then required clergy to hold a theology diploma or degree, show tax compliance and win a recommendation from a registered religious society.

The Penal Code makes insulting a religion a misdemeanour with up to two years in prison. Christian Solidarity Worldwide says these provisions are rarely used and should be reviewed.

Faith and Politics Before the 2027 Vote

The next general election falls on Tuesday 10 August 2027, the second Tuesday in August under Article 101. Church and mosque leaders are already speaking on cohesion, hate speech and political violence.

On 8 July 2026 the NCCK General Secretary, the Reverend Canon Chris Kinyanjui, asked the state cohesion commission to tighten action on hate speech. He warned that the 2027 election carries a serious risk of violence.

On 12 June 2026 armed men twice stormed All Saints’ Cathedral in Nairobi during a civic forum on the national budget. Archbishop Ole Sapit and the NCCK condemned the attack, and police said at least two suspects were arrested.

Two of the forum’s organisers, Transparency International Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission, said suspects named a political sponsor. Those claims have not been tested in court, and no alleged sponsor had been charged by late June 2026.

In a statement reported on 14 October 2026 and read at the ACK Synod, Archbishop Ole Sapit condemned abductions as immoral, unethical and unconstitutional. He warned that such acts risk plunging the country into lawlessness ahead of the 2027 election.

The State House church dispute showed the same tension. In July 2025 President William Ruto proposed an 8,000-seat church at State House, and Archbishop Ole Sapit objected to the location.

The Bench of Bishops backed the Archbishop on 11 July 2025, and Muslim leaders asked for a mosque as well. Nairobi’s Catholic Archbishop, Philip Anyolo, voiced concern about perceived bias.

On 28 August 2025 Justice Enock Mwita of the High Court barred permanent religious buildings at official residences until 18 November. The order followed a petition citing Article 8.

Ruto has since defended a chapel in the State House compound, The Star reported on 13 July 2026. He said it would serve staff and be paid for by him and his friends, not by public money.

The Star did not say how far building had progressed. Whether it is the same project that the court paused in 2025 is not stated.

Shakahola and the Debate on Regulating Churches

Shakahola is a forest area near Malindi where investigators found mass graves. Paul Mackenzie, a self-described pastor, was accused of urging followers to starve, and Christian Solidarity Worldwide counts 429 bodies.

A terrorism-related trial over deaths at Kwa Binzaro formally opened on Tuesday 4 August 2026 at the Shanzu Law Courts in Malindi. Mackenzie and seven co-accused face organised criminal activity charges linked to 52 deaths, and two face terrorism-related charges.

About 60 witnesses are expected, including four protected witnesses. The court allowed the prosecution to adopt earlier testimony from 18 witnesses in High Court Criminal Case E006 of 2026.

The accused are presumed innocent unless convicted. Investigators have reported 19 intact graves and five disturbed graves about 62 kilometres from Malindi.

After Shakahola, President Ruto commissioned a taskforce in May 2023 to review how religious organisations are governed. A proposed Religious Organisations Bill in the Senate would oversee theological training, set a code of conduct and require financial reporting.

Many churches oppose the bill and prefer self-regulation through a code of conduct. The government has said it has no intention of regulating religion.

Holidays and Festivals

Article 9 of the constitution names three national days: Madaraka Day on 1 June, Mashujaa Day on 20 October and Jamhuri Day on 12 December. A national day is a public holiday, and our Mashujaa Day 2026: 20 October Holiday, Eldoret, US Visitors guide explains the next one.

Both Islamic festivals of 2026 were declared by gazette notice. The Interior Cabinet Secretary declared Friday 20 March 2026 a public holiday for Idd-ul-Fitr, which ends Ramadan.

A second notice declared Wednesday 27 May 2026 a public holiday for Eid ul-Adha. It appeared in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated 25 May 2026.

The Catholic bishops sent Easter greetings in a public statement dated Thursday 16 April 2026. It called for peace, jobs for young people and respect for human life.

What It Means for US Readers

Investors should note that church and mosque networks are large service providers, with Catholic facilities alone supplying about a quarter of health care. Faith leaders also act as early warning voices on election risk, so political risk reviews should follow their statements.

Travellers face a Level 2 advisory, exercise increased caution, issued by the US State Department on 28 July 2026. Level 4, do not travel, applies to Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Lamu and Tana River counties, with Tsavo National Park excluded, and to parts of Kilifi and the coast north of Malindi.

The advisory says terrorists have targeted places of worship, hotels, markets and transport hubs. It warns that attacks can happen at any time, including around national days and religious holidays.

Expats and diaspora families will find faith groups at the centre of civic life, from health care to election monitoring. A faith group that wants to operate in Kenya generally registers with the Registrar of Societies, and should take legal advice on current rules.

What Is Not Known

No census since 2019 gives religion shares, so current numbers for Muslims, Catholics and evangelical churches are estimates at best. The ACK website gives a diocese count but no membership figure.

It could not be confirmed whether the High Court has ruled on the State House church petition, so its final outcome is open. The timing of any verdict in the Kwa Binzaro trial is also not known.

Neither the timetable nor the final rules of the Religious Organisations Bill have been confirmed. The number of Kenyan pilgrims on the 2026 Hajj has not been confirmed either.
