Following a chaotic conclusion to Week 5, the Washington Commanders found themselves in a frustrating 27-27 tie with the New York Giants after failing to spike the ball or stop the clock while in field goal range. In his postgame press conference, head coach Dan Quinn took full responsibility for the catastrophic blunder, expressing to reporters, via JP Finlay of NBC Sports, that he felt devastated for the team and that the decision to call for an earlier clock stoppage was entirely his fault.
While Quinn accepted the blame publicly, the aftermath of the overtime fiasco placed his future under intense scrutiny. A report shared on X by Mark Maske indicated that the Commanders were not inclined to fire Dan Quinn immediately as of Monday morning. A source told Front Office Sports that an instant dismissal was not part of the team’s immediate plans, although the costly clock mismanagement made Quinn’s eventual exit seem increasingly inevitable, making it more a question of “when” rather than “if.”
This uncertainty only fueled local media outrage over the team’s ongoing late-game operational failures. Dave Sheinin of the Washington Sun wrote a scathing lead that directly targeted the situation, stating: “As soon as the clock hit zero, Dan Quinn ripped the headset off his backwards-cap-covered head and spiked it into the turf, much like a well-prepared quarterback of a well-coached team might be expected to do with the football when his team is out of timeouts and well within range of a game-winning field goal in the final seconds of a critical NFL game.” This sharp critique underscored the growing frustrations surrounding both the coaching staff and franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels as Washington prepares to navigate the remainder of the season.
