Liverpool spent over £150 million on new players in the summer.
In a normal season, this would allow Liverpool to add many new faces to their ranks but, this time around, only four were brought.
In fact, the deal for Jeremy Jacquet was completed in January 2026 so, his transfer fee can't even be counted towards the total amount they spent.
And, while Jacquet, Ronald Araujo, Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola have all had a positive impact on Liverpool since joining, there are still some positions among their ranks that could do with an upgrade or two.
This has been made clear for a while now but, since the Reds don't have an endless money pit like some of their rivals, it's unclear whether the transfers they need to make will actually be completed in January.
But, fortunately for the Reds' fanbase, some transfers do seem to be on the horizon.
Fabrizio Romano admits that Liverpool's search for a new midfielder is becoming 'intense'
Fabrizio Romano is the transfer guru.
The Italian journalist was the first to break the news of Araujo joining Liverpool and, aside from his 'here we go' on Marc Guehi last season, his news about Liverpool has often been fairly accurate.
Whether its about a change of manager or a player exiting/joining, Romano has often been on point.
So, the fact that he's now said conversations about Liverpool signing a new midfielder have become 'intense' could mean that a January deal for one is on the way.
"Conversations on midfielders are becoming very very intense at Liverpool. We’ll have to wait and see whether it will be for January or the summer," he said via his YouTube channel.
"Lamine Camara and Alex Scott are appreciated."
Liverpool must do everything they can to sign a new midfielder soon
At the moment, Liverpool have four central midfielders among their ranks.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister are Iraola's two preferred options at the moment but, with Szoboszlai now out of action for who knows how long, others such as Ryan Gravenberch and even Trey Nyoni may be given a more regular role.
And, as well as Nyoni has played this season, relying on him to be a regular starter at just 19 years old feels a tad unfair.
So, signing a new central midfielder such as Alex Scott, Adam Wharton or Lamine Camara should be one of their top priorities.
Because, not only would it help improve their standing but, it could also help them get back to their best, especially since squad depth was one of their main issues last term.
For now, everything is still up in the air but, with Romano saying that things have become "intense" at Liverpool regarding their search for a midfielder, it certainly feels like a new number six is on the top of Julian Ward's agenda.
