Guwahati, Oct 12: Assam’s Special Task Force (STF) has seized 40,000 Yaba tablets, estimated to be worth ₹10 crore in the illicit market, from a car intercepted at Amingaon in Kamrup district in the early hours of Monday. One person has been arrested.
The seizure has brought the spotlight on a suspected drug trafficking route from Mizoram to Lower Assam, with the consignment allegedly being transported through Amingaon.
Acting on intelligence inputs that a narcotics consignment originating from Mizoram would be moved to a district in Lower Assam, an STF team intercepted a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire bearing registration number AS 01 EF 5876 and recovered the tablets, weighing approximately 4 kg.
The arrested person has been identified as Md Hakim Dewan, 36, a resident of Hahchora village under Barpeta police station in Assam’s Barpeta district.
According to official information, the seized tablets are valued at ₹6 crore as per the CID rate list, while their estimated street value is around ₹10 crore.
The operation was led by Kalyan Kumar Pathak, Additional Superintendent of Police, STF. Legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the seizure.
Yaba tablets typically contain methamphetamine, a powerful synthetic stimulant, often combined with other substances. The alleged Mizoram link is likely to be a key line of investigation as authorities seek to establish the consignment’s origin, intended destination and the wider network behind its transportation.
Further details about the suspected trafficking network are awaited.
