Lumding, Oct 14: A police complaint has been lodged at Lumding Police Station following the death of a 17-year-old girl under circumstances that remain unclear, with her family alleging physical abuse and suspecting that she died by suicide.
The girl, identified as Saptami Debnath, was found dead at her residence in Itabhata Chariali in Lumding late on Tuesday.
The allegations made by her family have not been independently verified, and the cause of death remains unconfirmed.
According to her father, Saptami was in a relationship with Rohit Das, a resident of Hari Om Tilla in Lumding.
He alleged that Rohit had physically assaulted her a few days before her death and that she had since stopped eating properly.
“As far as I know, they were in a relationship. We heard that the boy had physically assaulted my daughter a few days ago. Since then, she had stopped eating properly and had once spoken to her mother about taking her life,” he said.
The father further alleged that Saptami had recently visited Rohit’s house, where an altercation took place and both Rohit and his mother assaulted her.
“We had even discussed their marriage after they reach an appropriate age. We tried to counsel her, but she remained distressed. She was only 17 years old. We demand a proper investigation into the case and punishment for those found responsible for my daughter’s death,” he added.
The case has drawn further attention following the circulation of a purported Instagram post attributed to Saptami.
In the post, she allegedly accused Rohit of physical assault, mental harassment and humiliation during their relationship, and held him responsible for any harm that might come to her.
The authenticity and timing of the post could not be independently verified by The Assam Tribune.
A relative of Saptami also alleged that she had confronted Rohit in front of his mother during her recent visit to their home. The relative claimed that the couple had been involved in repeated arguments.
Family members said they had previously lodged a complaint against Rohit and his mother at Lumding Police Station.
Rohit is reportedly absconding after the incident, though his whereabouts and the status of the police investigation could not be independently confirmed.
