The Calgary Fire Department responded to the rescue at a construction site on 34th Avenue N.W. around 8:40 a.m. Friday.
Upon their arrival, a construction worker was found to have fallen around 30 feet down the manhole. Air-monitoring equipment was used, and crews were able to safely access the individual and initiate care.
The fire department’s Technical Rescue Team was dispatched to complete the rescue, using a rope system to safely remove the individual from the manhole.
The worker was then transported to hospital in stable condition.
Calgary Police also attended the scene to assist in the rescue, and Occupational Health and Safety was notified and is investigating.
“The Calgary Fire Department would like to recognize the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies whose collaboration contributed to the successful rescue,” CFD said in a Friday statement.
