The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), Coimbatore Region, has stocked emergency materials and formed response teams at various levels to address power supply disruptions and prevent electrical accidents during the north-east monsoon.
In a press release, Chief Engineer (Distribution), Coimbatore Region, T. Sumathi said adequate quantities of electric poles, transformers, conductors and restoration equipment had been stocked at strategic locations for deployment during emergencies.
Safety equipment had been provided to field staff, and emergency response teams had been formed at section, sub-division and division levels to restore power supply promptly. Vulnerable and flood-prone areas were being monitored, with priority given to hospitals, drinking water schemes, public health institutions and other essential services.
The corporation has advised the public to avoid touching fallen electric poles, snapped wires and damaged electrical installations.
Residents should switch off the mains supply if floodwater enters their premises and avoid operating electrical appliances with wet hands or while standing on wet surfaces.
People have also been advised against attempting electrical repairs themselves, tying cattle near transformers or electric poles, and allowing children to play near electrical installations.
Buildings should have proper earthing, while household electrical installations should be fitted with a 30 mA residual current device (RCD) to reduce the risk of electric shock.
Electrical hazards, including damaged poles, exposed cables and sagging wires, should be reported to the 24-hour electricity helpline at 94987 94987.
