Actor to move HC against notice
The Mumbai Police have issued a notice to Bollywood actor Imran Khan, an American national, directing him to leave India by October 28 for allegedly violating provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, officials said on Thursday.
The action follows the actor’s participation in an agitation at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10, where protesters demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Police had briefly detained Khan during the demonstration.
Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, who had sought action against Imran Khan after he participated in the protest, welcomed the police notice against him.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan will move the Bombay High Court challenging the notice issued to him to leave the country by October 28 for allegedly violating provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act by participating in a protest in solidarity with the agitation in Delhi against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Khan, a US national, is likely to file a petition in the high court by Friday or Monday through his advocate Zulfikar Memon from MZM Legal.
As per the plea, no provision of the law or any rule prohibits an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholder from participating in a protest.
The petition termed the Mumbai police notice, asking the 43-year-old actor to leave the country by October 28, as “drastic”.
Once filed, the plea is likely to be mentioned before a division bench of Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna for urgent hearing.
The administrative action follows Khan’s detention on October 10 during a demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan against CEC Gyanesh Kumar over the SIR issue.
Khan, who has acted in several Bollywood films, is the nephew of superstar Aamir Khan.
This is dictatorship: Opp slams govt
Opposition parties on Thursday labelled the government as “dictatorial” over actor Imran Khan, a US citizen, being asked to leave India for participating in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Accusing the Centre of running a dictatorship, Congress leader Nana Patole also alleged that people’s freedom was being snatched away, while Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the government was scared.
NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule said Khan did not commit any crime as he only took part in a protest, and claimed that leaders who have been accused of rape and murder are currently serving as chief ministers of many states.
Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) are part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) opposition alliance in Maharashtra. (Agencies)
