DAEJEON — The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) said on the 16th that Vice President Park Yeon-kyu has been elected to the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM), the top decision-making body in global metrology.
Park was elected as an incoming CIPM member at the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), held in France on the 15th. The election recognized more than 28 years of research in force and torque measurement standards, along with extensive international experience that includes serving as vice president for external relations at the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) and as a member of the executive committee of the Asia-Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP).
Park becomes the fifth CIPM member produced by KRISS. The institute's first was Chung Myung-se, Korea's inaugural CIPM member, elected in 1996 and KRISS's sixth president, followed by Chung Kwang-hwa in 2008, the ninth president; Kang Dae-im in 2013, the 11th president; and Park Sang-yeol in 2019, the 14th president. The succession has cemented Korea's leadership on the international metrology stage.
The CIPM is the core governing body for international measurement standards and comprises 18 experts, each of a different nationality. Its duties include discussing global metrology issues and drafting recommendations, reviewing the operations, administration and finances of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), and overseeing the activities of its consultative committees (CC) and appointing their chairs.
The committee also plays a central role in charting the development of measurement standards used worldwide, including the International System of Units (SI), and in setting and coordinating joint metrology activities pursued by member states of the Metre Convention.
Park will formally begin his term in March 2027.
