Digital nomad visas are making it easier than ever for South Africans to swap the office for an island or a desert view.
If your job is remote, you may not need to stay at home.
Several countries now let you live there while working for your South African employer or international clients.
But each has its own rules, and not every option is open to South Africans.
Digital nomad visas let you live in another country legally while working remotely for an employer or clients based elsewhere. Most require proof of income, health or travel insurance, and proof of remote work.
MAURITIUS: PREMIUM VISA
Mauritius’s Premium Visa is a popular option close to home, just a few hours’ flight from South Africa.
- Minimum income: $1,500 (about R24,675) a month per adult, plus $500 (about R8,225) a month for each dependent child.
- How long: Up to one year, and it can be renewed.
- Cost: The government visa is free.
- Good to know: You can’t take up local employment in Mauritius. If you stay longer than 183 days, you may become a tax resident there.
NAMIBIA: DIGITAL NOMAD VISA
Namibia’s visa is close to home and offers spectacular landscapes.
- Minimum income: $2,000 (about R32,900) a month, plus $1,000 (about R16,450) for an accompanying spouse and $500 (about R8,225) per accompanying child, according to the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB).
- How long: Up to six months.
- Requirements: You’ll need to work for companies or clients based outside Namibia, and have health or travel insurance. The NIPDB submits a motivation letter with your application.
- Good to know: The visa isn’t multiple-entry, so you’re expected to stay in Namibia for the full term.
SEYCHELLES: WORKCATION RETREAT PROGRAMME
Seychelles offers its Workcation Retreat Programme for remote workers.
- How long: Up to one year.
- Minimum income: There’s no fixed minimum, but you must prove you can support yourself, and any dependants, during your stay.
- Good to know: You’ll need to apply online for a Visitors Workcation Permit at least two weeks before you travel.
GEORGIA: NO NOMAD VISA NEEDED
Georgia doesn’t require South Africans to apply for a special visa.
South Africans can stay in Georgia visa-free for up to one year.
Since 1 January 2026, all tourists entering Georgia must have health and accident insurance, with minimum cover of GEL30,000 (about R181,000), according to Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Border officials check the insurance on arrival, and visitors without a valid policy can be refused entry.
WHAT ABOUT CAPE VERDE?
Cape Verde often appears on lists of digital nomad visas, but South Africans don’t qualify.
Its programme is only open to citizens of Europe, North America, Portuguese-speaking countries and West African states.
BEFORE YOU GO
- Check with your employer that you’re allowed to work from another country.
- Check your tax position with SARS, since working abroad can affect what you owe.
- Get the right insurance, since most visas require health or travel cover.
- Check the official requirements on each country’s government website, since rules change.
I’ll admit, answering emails with a view of the Indian Ocean sounds pretty perfect.
But a digital nomad visa takes planning, from your employer’s permission to your tax position.
Do your homework first, and the beach will still be there.
