PETALING JAYA: Police have launched an investigation after several houses inhabited by the Rohingya community in Kulai, Johor, were torched with Molotov cocktails past midnight today.
Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said a report was lodged around 1.30am today after the firebombing occurred, causing minor fires at the gates of the houses.
He said the fires were put out swiftly and no injuries or property damage were reported.
Rahaman said investigations showed the incident might have been in response to two viral videos purportedly showing a group of Rohingya men daring people to a fight in Kulai.
"A Rohingya man in his 30s has lodged a police report denying involvement in the videos. He claimed that his picture was misused by others to produce the video," he said in a statement.
Rahaman said police were investigating the firebombing for mischief by fire as well as the spread of the viral videos for improper use of network facilities and statements conducing to public mischief.
