Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Sunday launched the Iru Ekun Security Network in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, with about 20,000 volunteers reportedly joining the outfit.
The launch, held at the popular Mapo Hall, came as Igboho explained his recent visit to Abuja, saying it was aimed at strengthening the security network and improving its operations across the South-West.
A statement issued by Igboho’s media office in Ibadan on Sunday said the initiative was established to strengthen community security and tackle criminal activities in Yorubaland and parts of Kwara and Niger states.
The statement read, “The launch of Iru Ekun in Oyo followed similar inaugurations of the local security initiative in Osun, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states, including active engagement with traditional rulers and community leaders in Yorubaland.
“The security outfit has, since its establishment, collaborated with the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies to stem the spate of abductions, killings and other forms of insecurity, particularly in the South-West.”
The statement quoted Igboho as commending the large turnout of volunteers, describing it as a sign of public interest in community security.
“The impressive development represents a milestone which indicates the genuine interest of Oyo people in active participation to ensure the safety and security of residents, irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation,” he said.
Igboho said his trip to Abuja was intended to discuss issues relating to the network’s responsibilities and explore ways to strengthen its operations across the South-West.
“I was in Abuja this morning so that Iru Ekun’s security responsibilities can be further strengthened. This is because Iru Ekun is the brainchild of South-West traditional rulers, and it will continue to serve its purpose for the peace and effective security of our communities.
“I received the call last night to come to Abuja. My Abuja trip was as a result of the collaboration with our traditional ruler, the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
“Firstly, I want to thank Almighty God, who has all power, owns us and preserves us. The God that says we won’t be overcome by bandits. We thank God.
“After that, we thank all traditional rulers in Nigeria, and may God grant them long life. We are also paying homage to the person, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who provided this platform so that we can interact as Iru Ekun members. Some people are still taking a despicable look at you (volunteers). Soon, they will lobby you for positions,” Igboho said.
He also urged Nigerians, including members of the Iru Ekun Security Network, to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid and vote for the All Progressives Congress in the forthcoming presidential election.
