A US government contractor has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, over allegations that he leaked classified national defence information to someone who repeatedly published sensitive material online.
The US Department of Justice identified the suspect as Ian A. Brinksman, 42, of Washington, DC. He was arrested on Friday, October 23, after investigators searched his residence.
According to the Justice Department, Brinksman faces a charge of unlawfully transmitting national defence information.
Prosecutors allege that he accessed classified intelligence reports beyond the limits of his official responsibilities and shared the material with someone with whom he was romantically involved.
The individual allegedly operates a publication on Substack, an online publishing platform, and has published articles containing information derived from classified government assessments.
Investigators said Brinksman had held a top-secret security clearance that permitted access to Sensitive Compartmented Information while working for a US government agency. He later worked as a systems integration developer for a private contractor serving the same agency.
US authorities allege that at least five articles published in 2026 contained information closely matching classified reports, including intelligence assessments.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg said Brinksman allegedly obtained highly sensitive material outside his authorised duties and passed it to someone he knew intended to make the information public.
“That is not carelessness. It is a betrayal of his oath and the American people who entrusted him to fulfil his duties honourably,” Eisenberg said.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Justice Department would continue to pursue cases involving alleged leaks of classified information that threaten national security.
FBI Director Kash Patel described the protection of US government secrets as a counterintelligence priority, warning that individuals who abuse positions of trust and endanger national security would face prosecution.
The investigation is being led by the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, with support from its Washington Field Office. The Justice Department’s National Security Division and federal prosecutors are handling the case.
The charge against Brinksman remains an allegation. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
