Mamata TMC's MP Abhishek Banerjee appeared at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in Kolkata on Wednesday for questioning over the August 27 disturbance surrounding the removal of a party billboard on Camac Street, a police officer said.
Banerjee reached the police station at around 11.30am, according to the officer.
The Kolkata Police had issued two notices to Banerjee at his Kalighat residence, directing him to appear before investigators in connection with a complaint filed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The civic body alleged that police personnel and municipal workers were harassed and assaulted while trying to remove signage belonging to the TMC from a building housing its party office on Camac Street in central Kolkata.
The August 27 incident had triggered protests by Banerjee’s supporters as police and KMC officials attempted to take down the billboard bearing the party’s name and its symbol.
Three FIRs were registered at Shakespeare Sarani police station in connection with the incident.
Condemning the move of the police, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh said, "The BJP (government) has stooped so low that a notice has been served even after 'Mahalaya' when the Durga Puja is just days away."
'Mahalaya' signifies the termination of 'Pitri Paksha' and the beginning of 'Devi Paksha', thus ushering in the season of religious festivals.
