Federal police held a priest and two activists near the presidential palace on Friday. Protesters and officials give very different accounts of why.
Federal police detained priest Francisco “Paco” Olveira and two activists at a pension protest in Buenos Aires on Friday, 23 October 2026. The priest was freed shortly before 9 p.m. local time, according to TeleSol Diario and Del Sur Diario.
Protest accounts say the three were held only for carrying the Argentine flag. Official accounts describe an attempt to force entry into the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace.
The case matters to US readers because it tests how President Javier Milei’s government handles protest at its own palace. Investors in Argentine bonds and shares watch such social tension closely.
What Happened at Plaza de Mayo
Plaza de Mayo is the square in front of the Casa Rosada, in central Buenos Aires. On Friday afternoon, federal police detained Olveira and two other protesters there during a retirees’ protest.
The two others are Cristian Valderrama and Lucas García, according to Página/12, Minuto Uno and TeleSol Diario. Olveira belongs to Curas en Opción por los Pobres, a group whose name means “Priests in Option for the Poor”.
TeleSol Diario and Del Sur Diario report that Olveira was accused of resisting authority. They say the other two remained held after he left custody.
Olveira had been detained at earlier protests, in November 2025 and February 2026, those outlets add. By that count, this is his third detention in under a year.
Who Are the Two Activists
Valderrama and García became known at the latest Marcha Federal Universitaria, a march to defend public university funding. A photo showed them holding an Argentine flag in front of an advancing water-cannon truck.
Since then they have joined pension marches and other protests, TeleSol Diario reports. Tiempo Argentino, a left-leaning outlet, calls them symbols of resistance.
Only Tiempo Argentino reports that both were released in the early hours of Saturday, 24 October. It says they were held at a police facility at Suipacha 150 while human rights groups waited outside overnight.
Two Accounts of What Happened
Olveira told reporters the two young people were detained “only for carrying the Argentine flag”. He said he went inside the police line to stand beside them and not leave them alone.
Página/12, a newspaper critical of the government, headlined the arrests as violence and repression during a peaceful retirees’ protest. Its report says federal police made the arrests.
The official version came through the news agency Noticias Argentinas, as relayed by Minuto Uno. It says authorities reported that three people tried to force their way into the Casa de Gobierno.
A scuffle followed with presidential guards and security forces, and the three were restrained and arrested, Minuto Uno and Diario Crónica report. The official running the building’s operations was hurt and taken to the Churruca-Visca medical complex as a precaution, official versions say.
One detainee wore clothing with inscriptions referring to Olveira and a group called “Los 12 apóstoles”, the same reports say. LCR Diario Digital adds that officials stressed the security protocol worked and that the president and other officials were not at risk.
Federal forces then reinforced patrols and checks around the perimeter and main entrances of the Casa Rosada. Neither account has been tested in court.
Why Retirees Keep Marching
Retirees hold weekly protests in central Buenos Aires over their income. The October minimum pension is ARS 435,748.51 (about US$285, at ARS 1,528 per US$ on 24 October 2026), up 1.66%.
ANSES, the national social security agency, also pays a bonus of up to ARS 70,000 (about US$46), iProfesional reports. With it, the lowest pensioners receive ARS 505,748 (about US$331).
What It Means for US Readers
Scenes at the Casa Rosada draw attention abroad, including in the United States. Investors in Argentine bonds and shares watch whether social tension complicates the government’s austerity drive.
Visitors to central Buenos Aires can expect a heavy police presence around Plaza de Mayo on protest days. Reports say federal forces tightened checks around the palace after Friday’s incident.
Related reports cover the Falklands bill, the LIBRA ruling for Milei and the Kirchner trial. The Argentina news hub and the guide to Argentina give more context.
What Is Not Known
No Ministry of Security statement was found, and the official account rests on agency reports citing unnamed sources. The Página/12 page could not be read in full, so its text was checked in republished copies.
No report says whether a court opened a case against anyone. Every report opened names one injured official, with no medical details.
The release of the two activists rests on Tiempo Argentino alone. No Infobae, La Nación, Clarín or Perfil report was found, no video is verified, and no court has ruled.
What Comes Next
The next step is whether a federal prosecutor or judge brings charges over the Casa Rosada incident. The next weekly retirees’ protest at Plaza de Mayo will show how police handle the crowd.
Release from custody does not mean the cases are closed, and it does not settle which account is right. Any charges would be allegations until a court decides.
