Recent investigations have revealed that Switzerland spent more than $16,000 to host a Taliban delegation in Geneva to identify citizens of Afghanistan convicted of crimes and facilitate their deportation.
Swissinfo reported on Saturday, October 24, that documents obtained by the investigative group WAV show that the Taliban delegation’s visit cost approximately $16,250.
The delegation travelled to Switzerland in August 2025 and spent two nights at the Mövenpick Hotel in Geneva.
According to the report, the purpose of the Taliban delegation’s visit was to identify 13 citizens of Afghanistan who had been convicted of crimes in Switzerland and whom the Swiss government intended to deport.
The documents also show that Swiss officials provided the Taliban with the personal information of individuals they intended to deport.
Refugee rights experts have warned that sharing these individuals’ personal information with the Taliban could put their safety at risk.
The issue has also raised concerns about legitimising the Taliban regime.
According to the report, the four Taliban representatives also received payments to cover their travel and accommodation expenses during their two-night stay in Geneva.
